Mardi Gras originated as a fun-filled celebration that preceded a time of limited indulgence (Lent). In many cultures and religions where fasting occurs, the fast is broken at the end with a decadent feast. In the Catholic tradition, the fast before Easter is also preceded by a decadent feast, in addition to the Easter feast that breaks the fast.
